Narrative Music Videos

The 1975- Robbers

Alt- J- Breezeblocks

Both narrative music videos create a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals. In 'Breezeblocks' there is use of a breezeblock as a prop in the beginning, taking the words 100% literally, there is also a clip of a girl held below water as the singer sings 'hold her down'. In the 'Robbers' video, the entire storyline is centred around theft, so it is clear that Goodwin's first convention is the most important when creating a narrative music video.
However, close ups and voyeurism is less important in this style of video. In fact, the actual artist is not even shown in the Alt- J video. As for the 1975, they are featured but there is no particular emphasis on their appearance, instead the story becomes the focus.
Even though the band is not the focus, there is an awful lot of iconography used. For example, there are visuals of drugs and camper vans in order to promote their 'rock image'. Use of genre- specific details is a convention which is believed to be important for constructing music videos.
