Filming Day

During lunch we made a trip to Holly's house to film the 'letter opening' scene. This would be an important element of our narrative as it shows Janadhi's official enrolment in to the army. We knew mise- en- scene would be important here, and we needed the setting and props to be effective.

Holly's house was perfect as she has big, front- facing windows which would let in a lot of natural light. This would help to make the letter visible on screen, and also would soften the colours in order to comply with our colour palette.

The army enrolment letter was made on word. I took inspiration from some I had found through google searches. They followed the general letter format, but each of them had a large signature at the bottom of the page, and also an army logo in the top left corner. I wanted to make the army logo as big and blatant as possible, making sure the audience follow the storyline. The rest of the letter was composed of key information from the army website, e.g. training location, training dates and any uniform information.

We needed 4 shots on this particular day; a long shot of the letter arriving, a close up of the letter on the mat, a long shot of Janadhi picking up the letter, and then a close up of it being opened. For the final shot we experimented with several angles and positions, making sure the writing was visible and the logo was the key focus in frame. I took this opportunity to play with the SLR manual focusing and zoom, zooming in to parts of the letter and highlighting some of the words using the focus.
