BFI Trip

As a class, we attended the coursework presentation at the British Film Institute. The talk was made by Tom Woodstock, an A level media teacher. For the first part of the session, he focused on the history of music videos, taking us from the very early kaleidoscope videos, all the way up to Adele's 2015 IMAX video.

This video dates back to between 1935 and 1937, it it a combination of the videos for 'A colour box' and 'Colour flight'. Both were created by Len Lye, a New- Zealand born artist, famous for his experimental work. The videos are almost hypnotic with the varying colours and shapes. Videos like this are still prominent in modern times, examples can be found by Tame Impala, who match the abstract videos with their 'psychedelic' music.

However, this style does not have much influence towards our own music video as we have chosen to create a more prominent narrative. Adele's 2015 video for 'Hello' is more inspiring for me personally as there is a clear storyline composed of striking visuals. The video was directed by actor and director; Xavier Dolan, produced mainly using IMAX cameras making it the first of its kind. Since it's release on 22nd October 2015, the video has since broken records with 27.7 million views in its first 24 hours. From the video, we can adopt many of the camera angles for our own piece, and also slow down the speed of the shots as Dolan has repeatedly done. Below is the full video.
