Rule of Thirds

The 'Rule of Thirds' is a specific composition technique which makes for a more interesting image. The basic principle is to break down the frame into a 9 square grid, using two vertical and two horizontal lines, the image can be then composed using the lines as a guide.

There are a few general rules to follow when using the guidelines. First, the horizon line should follow one of the two horizontal lines, this creates balanced and makes the image comfortable for viewers to look at. Another rule is to place the subject at one of the intersections of the lines, this will place them slightly of centre therefore making them a point of interest.
