Inspiration: Katy Perry- 'Part of Me"

Katy Perry released her 'Part of me' single in February 2012, the lyrics describe a female protagonist who declares herself unbreakable after a breakup. The accompanying music video shows Katy Perry enlisting in the marines following her heartbreak, I feel it has a strong 'girl power' message, yet it did receive an awful lot of criticism when initially released. Feminist author, Naomi Wolf, claimed that it was simply military propaganda.

Filming for the music video took place over three days in USMC Camp Pendleton. No actors were used, all extras were actual marines, and much of her experience was genuine. Katy Perry was shot during rigorous military training, military etiquette classes and combat training.

The theme and content links directly to our music video as we want to show a young woman's journey to the military. However, there are also specific shots which we would like to recreate for ourselves. One of which is the shot of Katy Perry being shouted at by a corporal. This frame shows her transition to somewhere of high authority, which I feel works well with our storyline.

There are also several training shots of Katy Perry, ones which show her clambering through agility courses and climbing fences. We need visuals like this as our protagonist also faces tough physical challenges in order to escape her life. They also work well with the upbeat tempo of the song, similar to Kodaline's 'Ready'.

Here is the 'Part of Me' video in full;
