Genre Research- Vance Joy

Vance Joy- Riptide

Genre: Indie

James Keogh (Vance Joy) is an Australian singer- songwriter who is currently signed to Atlantic Records with a five- album deal. His major success came with the song 'Riptide' which was voted number one on the Triple J Hottest 100 chart in 2013.
His debut album was released on 5th September 2014, with the title 'Dream Your Life Away'. With branding from such a large label, I think his music appeals to a huge audience, with funding for publicity, his music is easily accessible.

In his music videos, Vance Joy typically uses a narrative. I think 'Riptide' falls into this category, but the literal link between visuals and lyrics make it a less typical narrative.

  • Mise- en scene: Low- key lighting, rural setting (beach, desert), faded colour palette, shots of natural aesthetics (waves, flowers, clouds), 1970s style costumes and props
  • Cinematography: Mostly consists of close ups to show the literal definition of words (i.e. close up of left hand for 'left- hand man' lyric), shots flow in to one another with upwards/ downwards pan.
  • Message of video, generic types: The purpose of the visuals is to literally translate the lyrics. However, there is an underlying message of female objectification, especially in the 70s era, as the women are shown in swim suits (overtly sexual) and also shown tied up, whereas the male characters are shown as cowboys and the heroes in the short scenes.

The faded colour palette and the 70s theme are the most prominent
features in the Riptide music video
